In most arcs SPR relies on John's exorcisms whenever a human being is possessed by a spirit. In the Cursed House arc, it is revealed that John's exorcisms, unlike Houshou's Buddhist Mantras or Ayako's Shinto Kuji, do not cause physical harm when used on a possessed living creature.
