📜 Tungkol kay Edward Elric

Age: 15-16 (series), 18 (movie, end of the series) Birthday: 1899 Birthplace: Resembool, Amestris Family: Alphonse Elric (brother), Trisha Elric (mother, deceased), Van Hohenheim (father) Affiliations: State Military, Winry Rockbell, Pinako Rockbell, Izumi Curtis (teacher), Roy Mustang (Commander) Species: Human Occupation: State Alchemist Abilities: Alchemy, Martial Arts Weapon: Alchemy, Automail arm and leg Edward "Fullmetal Alchemist" Elric is a young alchemical prodigy. He is the youngest State Alchemist ever to be recognized by the Amestris State Military, having received the title at the age of 12. Ed's primary motivation throughout the series is to return his younger brother, Alphonse, to his original body, which was lost in a failed human transmutation. Edward, despite his occasional bouts of immaturity, is a selfless boy who gains a reputation as a "hero of the people" throughout his youth. Notably, he doesn't seem concerned about returning his own arm and leg, instead focusing entirely on Al's suffering. Edward is small for his age, standing at only 149 cm (4'11"), however, his body is that of an experienced martial artist, with noticeable muscles and a wealth of agility. Although he lacks both his right arm and left leg, Ed's ability to fight is not impaired and is in fact improved, as he will often use alchemy to cause his metal arm to partly transform into a blade or shield. His heavy automail limbs are considered by him to be the very best in Amestris. They were made by his childhood friend, Winry Rockbell, and she is constantly working on them. He is able to think quickly, even in desperate situations, though can still be frightened into paralysis. These qualities, combined with his alchemical powers and physical strength, make him a formidable fighter. Born to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim of Resembool in the winter of 1899, Edward's first few years were relatively happy; but after the sudden departure of his father during the lad's formative years, Ed was left with his mother and younger brother Alphonse as his only family. The three Elrics lived in peace in the rural village and the boys began displaying a remarkable talent for alchemy at a young age, much to the joyful astonishment of his mother. However, early in the year 1904, Trisha contracted an illness that had been spreading in the area and died, leaving her two sons orphaned. Even while mourning, mired in grief, Edward vowed to his brother that the two of them would find a way to bring their dead mother back to life with the power of alchemy. Edward and Alphonse spent the next few years living on their own in the Elric family home, supported by their close childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako, and pursuing the alchemical knowledge necessary for their planned resurrection. Although they had gained a great deal of information and comprehension regarding the extended basics of the craft, before long it became apparent to the young prodigies that there was only so far they could go while being self-taught. In a stroke of good fortune, Resembool was visited by an exceptionally skilled alchemist named Izumi Curtis who, after some persuasion, agreed to take the Elric brothers on as her apprentices provided they pass a preliminary test. After they do, the Elric brothers were subjected to Izumi's intensive alchemy and martial arts training, growing significantly in both mind and body and gaining a great deal of alchemical knowledge before returning to Resembool. Though instructed specifically by Izumi to understand that death is an irreversible part of the flow of the world and that acceptance of such is important to the "One is All, All is One" concept, the boys dove headlong into their plan to resurrect their mother upon their homecoming, having advanced their knowledge while abroad and discovered the basics of a forbidden practice called Human Transmutation. Devising a Human Transmutation Circle, amassing the elemental ingredients for an adult human body and offering their own blood as soul and biological data, the boys secretly initiated the Human Transmutation in their home. Unfortunately, the Human Transmutation resulted in a Rebound. Alphonse and Edward were pulled into The Gate. Encountering the mysterious being called Truth, Edward was stripped of his left leg in exchange for crossing into God's domain and peeking at the Gate's vast wealth of alchemical knowledge. Maimed and bleeding, Edward was returned to the human dimension to find that Alphonse had not yet returned from his disappearance into the Gate, that the mother they had attempted to revive was a grotesque mass of organs only capable of sustaining life for a few moments and that his own sojourn into the Gate had granted him the curious ability to perform transmutations merely by clapping his hands together, without the aid of a Transmutation Circle - in the same style used by Izumi. Desperate to at least have his brother by his side, Edward willfully performed another Human Transmutation to call him back, this time sacrificing his right arm in exchange for Al's soul, which he bound alchemically to an antique suit of armor with a Blood Rune before passing out from severe blood loss. Alphonse carried Ed to the Rockbell house, where a shocked Pinako and Winry performed emergency surgery to save the young boy's life. On the night of the failed transmutation. Lt. Colonel Flame Alchemist Roy Mustang came to the Rockbell's in response to a letter that Edward and Alphonse had sent him in the mail asking about their Father. He was shocked at the fact that the two boys had tried human alchemy and survived, and informed them that they could become state alchemist and maybe one day find a way to return their bodies to the way they were. Desperate to get His younger brother's body back, Edward asked the Rockbells to give him prosthetic limbs called automail. Though they warned him the surgery would be painful, he said the pain was nothing compared to what his brother had given up. He only took a year to adapt to the automail at age 11 when it took most adults three years.

🧠 Personality

On the surface, Edward displays an immature sort of personality. He is decidedly stubborn and strong-willed, frequently letting his pettiness and vindictiveness get the better of him. He is somewhat selfish and remarkably self-absorbed, generally acting more out of self-interest than any sort of philanthropy, as well as taking several opportunities to stroke his own ego or flaunt the governmental power of his military position. He is largely hostile towards figures of authority and feels little incentive to follow orders with which he disagrees, earning him the distinction of being a loose cannon. Edward is also rather quick-tempered, resorting more often to steel-fisted violence than calm negotiation to settle disputes. He has a reputation for being foul-mouthed and is an incurably sarcastic cynic, only too happy to bluntly and harshly relieve others of their comfortable delusions regarding god, reality, or their own self-importance.

However, for those few people who have made an impact on him, Ed shows his deeper nature to be one of marked selflessness, unflinching loyalty, and great compassion. As someone who has had to suffer greatly at such a young age, Edward cannot ignore the true suffering of others and becomes sympathetic upon sensing pain and resolve in people's hearts. Though his solemn advice to such people is often tempered with brusque criticism, it is only because he genuinely wishes to place them on the most direct path forward. As one burdened by the mistakes of his past, he stresses the necessity of people taking responsibility for their own errors. Ed tends to help only those with the will — but not the means — to help themselves, bending the rules to dole out a Robin Hood-esque justice in accordance with his strong belief in Equivalent Exchange, earning him notoriety and popularity as a "hero of the people."

The most noticeable of Edward's dispositional characteristics is his Napoleonic denial of his shortness. Even in moments of relative composure, any and all references to his stature cause him to violently lose control of his emotions and lash out both verbally and physically. He takes even the most casual mention of his height as a gross insult and interprets it exaggeratedly. Those unfortunate to utter the word "small" in his presence are fated to suffer one of his vindictive tantrums.

Though Edward proudly professes that he does not believe in gods, his spiritual sensibilities tend more toward the agnostic than the atheistic; he frequently acknowledges the existence of a god in his speech, if only to justify why his life has been so difficult.

👔 Appearance

Edward is quite short for his age, standing at only 4'8" at the beginning of the series, despite his attempts to appear taller (due to the notation that he cannot stand regular milk). He wears his golden-blond hair long — usually tied in a braid that hangs down to his shoulders, but sometimes forgoing the braid for a simpler ponytail. He parts his bangs in the middle so that they frame his face on either side and, in the center of the parting, he leaves a single strand of hair sticking up like an antenna, which he does intentionally to add to his height. Ed's eyes are gold, signifying his Xerxesian ancestry.

Early on, Ed receives a thin, horizontal battle scar just above his right eye. As the series progresses, some of his facial features begin to take on characteristics similar to his father's. By the end of the series, Edward has grown noticeably taller, being several inches taller than Winry and finally being at least equal in height to Alphonse.

As a result of his alchemical dismemberment, Edward was fitted with full steel automail prosthetics custom crafted by Winry and Pinako Rockbell. His left leg from just above the knee downward and his right arm all the way up to his shoulder are automail, designed so that their outer shells resemble modernized plate mail. After traveling to the northern area, he is refitted with lighter, cold-climate automail limbs rich in carbon to prevent frost damage.

His trademark is a bright red, long-sleeved, hooded cloak with a black Flamel emblem on the back, signifying his tutelage under Izumi Curtis. He typically wears black trousers, a sleeveless black shirt, and a black jacket with silver/white lining. He also wears elevator boots with thick red soles and white gloves to conceal his automail arm.

⚡ Abilities

Despite Edward's small stature and young age, he is a remarkable combatant:

Martial Arts: Having apprenticed under Izumi Curtis, Ed was taught to condition his body through regular workouts and sparring as part of her philosophy, "to train the spirit, first train the body." His slight frame belies a compactly muscular build that fuels his considerable strength and agility, allowing him to throw people much bigger than he is. His steel automail right arm and left leg augment his fighting strength by adding to his defensive and offensive capabilities as well as his speed — especially after being refitted with lighter, cold-climate automail.

Alchemical Genius: As suggested by his unprecedented acceptance into the State Alchemist program at age 12, Edward is an alchemical prodigy of genius-level intellect. From early childhood, he displayed proficiency for alchemy, acquiring self-taught skills from the advanced literature in his father's abandoned study. Having incorporated alchemy into his life during his developmental stages, Edward sees the world alchemically and can solve complicated codes, puzzles, and mysteries much more easily than normal. His near-encyclopedic knowledge of alchemical theory contributed to his incredible success with emergency Soul Binding experimentation.

Clapping Transmutation: Having passed through The Gate and witnessed the Truth, Edward became one of the few alchemists who do not require a drawn Transmutation Circle. By merely touching his palms together, he creates an energy circulation and transmutes using his own will as a substitute for the necessary runes — making his transmutations both instantaneous and incredibly versatile in direct combat.

Combat Alchemy: Edward becomes a master of his surroundings — creating giant earthen hands to lift objects, columns of stone to gain the higher ground, and ogre-faced battering rams to strike opponents. He specializes in transmuting weapons, but his primary weapon is his automail right arm, whose forearm plating he transmutes into various blades.

Style Adaptation: The true genius of Edward's combat alchemy lies in his aptitude for incorporating the alchemy styles of others into his own after merely having once seen them in action. He has adapted Scar's deconstruction stage, Armstrong's gauntlets and stone spikes, and Greed's carbon armor hardening into his combat repertoire.

Note: Edward loses his ability to perform alchemy after using his Gate of Truth as the toll to bring Alphonse back, though he retains his full knowledge of alchemy.

Ed and Al's bond is the emotional core of FMA and it's built on shared trauma that neither of them caused. They were kids who wanted their mother back and the universe punished them for it. Ed carrying the guilt of Al's body for years, while Al never once blamed him, is the most pure sibling relationship in anime.
KiraCaseDetective
The fact that Ed passed the State Alchemist exam at 12 without alchemy—using only combat skills—tells you he was already extraordinary before he ever drew a transmutation circle. His genius isn't just in alchemy; it's in how he adapts under pressure.
PrismVeil
The final sacrifice Ed makes—giving up his ability to use alchemy to get Al back—is perfect because it's the one thing he never would have given up for himself. He didn't sacrifice a body part this time. He sacrificed his identity. And he did it with a smile.
BentoboxArt
Ed's refusal to use human transmutation ever again isn't just a moral stance—it's the most character-defining choice in the series. He could have used the Philosopher's Stone to get Al's body back instantly, but he refused to sacrifice the souls inside it. He chose the harder path because it was right.

Ed calling himself 'short' isn't just a gag—it's a trauma trigger from the transmutation. His body was literally stunted by the attempt to revive his mother. Every time someone mentions his height, they're unintentionally reminding him of his worst mistake. His anger isn't comedy; it's pain.
