The timeskip hurts the show's pacing but makes a crucial thematic point: Light at his peak is boring. He's won, he's complacent, he's making mistakes. The second half shows what absolute power does to someone—it doesn't make them smarter, it makes them arrogant. Near didn't outsmart Light; Light defeated himself.

The genius of Death Note is that it's a thriller with zero action. Every conflict is resolved through deduction, manipulation, and psychological warfare. Two men sitting in a room thinking is more tense than any fight scene in shounen anime. That's masterful writing.

The Yotsuba arc is the most underrated part of Death Note. Light without his memories is who he could have been—a genuinely good person who uses his intellect to solve crimes. The tragedy is that the real Light is the one with the Death Note, and the kind Light is the performance.
KiraCaseFile
L's funeral scene with the stack of case files and the single line 'I'm sorry I couldn't save you' from Watari's decrypted message... L knew he was going to die and prepared for it. He left instructions for Near and Mello because he trusted that his successors would finish what he started.
NotebookOfFate
Rem's sacrifice for Misa is the only truly selfless act in the entire series. She knew killing L would kill her, and she did it anyway because she loved Misa. In a show about manipulation and power, the most powerful moment comes from pure love.
