Shoko's suicide attempt on the balcony is the most realistic depiction of depression in anime. She's not dramatic about it—she's quiet, almost peaceful, because she genuinely believes everyone would be better off without her. That's what real suicidal ideation looks like, and Yamada directed it perfectly.

The visual metaphor of the X's on people's faces dissolving as Shoya reconnects with them is the most powerful use of visual storytelling in anime film. He literally couldn't see people as individuals because of his guilt. As he forgives himself, he can finally see the world again.
